About
Tom Holm played poker for a living from 2014 through 2023. He started grinding 6-max no-limit at NL100 in late college, moved up to NL400 / NL600 through 2017, and spent his peak years (2018–2021) backed by a stable out of Malta playing high-stakes mid-stakes Zoom on PokerStars and the occasional GGPoker MTT side mission. The HHs are there. He’s not making this up — anyone who played NL5/10 Zoom in the EU pool in 2019 saw him, and his TwoPlusTwo post history under his old handle goes back fourteen years.
He stopped playing seriously in late 2023 for the usual reasons: pools got harder, the mental load stopped being fun, and somewhere along the way he realized that the actual edge he’d developed over a decade — patient EV-arbitrage thinking, comfortable with five-figure swings, willing to grind a +1.5% edge for thousands of trials — was a better fit for systematic bonus analysis than for another year of staring at a HUD. He started writing up bonus structures on his own blog the way he used to write up hand histories. People read them. He kept going.
Tom writes about bonus EV the way a poker player thinks about it: not “is this a good bonus” but “what’s the expected return on this bonus net of variance, what’s the variance, and how does the operator’s bonus-abuse-detection model affect my realized return.” That framing produces unusual conclusions. Most welcome bonuses are -EV. A few are aggressively +EV if you know the wagering structure. Sticky vs. non-sticky math is the single most important variable nobody explains correctly. And the operators most aggressive about wagering requirements are usually the ones offering the worst games to clear them on, which is the whole trick.
He does not play for backers anymore. He lives in Tallinn, runs the analysis side of a small private bonus-tracker spreadsheet that some former colleagues subscribe to, and writes for sites like this one because the alternative is reading bonus terms in silence.
Expertise Areas
- Wagering-requirement EV math — turnover requirements, game weightings, max-bet rules, and how each input changes expected return.
- Sticky vs. non-sticky bonus analysis — the structural difference, why it dominates other bonus terms, and the exact math.
- Bonus-abuse-detection modeling — what operators flag, how that affects realized EV for the disciplined player.
- Reload and cashback program structure — when reloads are real and when they’re acquisition theater.
- Tournament overlay and freeroll value — applied poker math, ICM-aware structures, MTT EV.
- Bankroll math for promotion farming — risk-of-ruin under specific bonus-clearance variance profiles.
